Call for Abstracts - Masterclass w/ Godfried Engbersen

Submission Deadline: 1 December 2009

On 28 January 2010 Prof. Dr. Godfried Engbersen will give an interdisciplinary master class and public lecture at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Godfried Engbersen is Professor of Sociology at the Erasmus University Rotterdam and has published widely on various issues relating to migration and integration, and endorses a broad inter-disciplinary perspective. His expertise stretches into aspects of social inequality, urban marginality, migration and integration policies, and the positions of ethnic minorities and illegal immigrants.

The master classes are designed to have doctoral students benefit from the input and comments of international experts in their research domain. The format of the master class will be that a selected number of PhD candidates present their ongoing research in a closed workshop and get feedback from the international expert as well as from an invited national expert whose expertise tallies closely with the prime research domain of the doctoral student. The day will end with a public lecture by Professor Engbersen.

The master class will provide an excellent opportunity to get feedback on the research but also allows for more informal discussion of theoretical starting points, methodological issues and interpretation of findings with the invited experts. As the focus of this master class is explicitly interdisciplinary, students engaged in research on migration and integration from as diverse a discipline as sociology, history, geography, demography, law, philosophy, language studies, or other related fields are encouraged to participate.

Abstracts

All selected PhD students have to submit a short research paper (between 7 to 10 pages) before January 10th, 2010. Selected doctoral students registered with the doctoral school will receive 2 ECTS by submitting a paper in time and participating in the master class.
